GDP Up, Down, Recession ended
In response to the release of the GDP figure today, the CEO of SACCI, Neren Rau said:
Quote:
SACCI welcomes the improvement in the GDP figures released by STATSSA this morning which indicate that South Africa has moved out of the recession. The improvement of 0,9%, led by manufacturing contributing 1,1% points based on growth of 7,5% over the last quarter. It has long been SACCI’s opinion that the recovery will be led by this sector of the economy. Notwithstanding the increase in the GDP figure, the South African economy remains vulnerable. SACCI calls on government and labour to remain sensitive to the
economic conditions that underpin the data and to exercise restraint in the demands that they make on business during the gradual upturn. Failure to recognise the fragility of the improvement will impair the country’s ability to gather the momentum required for sustained improvement.
