International Business

Trade & Investment

The Durban Chamber hosts inbound missions together with various stakeholders, to promote trade opportunities and business to business meetings with trade delegates. Trade missions play a significant role in the economic development of our country and international trade. This means that our  members have full access to an international network, as well as access to international markets.

Trade Agreements

Trade Agreements in Africa

The trade and investment department accelerates government-to-government relations and mechanisms to advance a developmental agenda in Africa that focuses on:
  1. Identifying and establishing joint investment projects in partner countries
  2. Promoting two-way trade
  3. Coordinating South African technical cooperation and assistance to support policy and institutional development in partner countries
  4. Promoting cross-border infrastructure development, notably on the basis of the SDI methodology
  5. Promoting regional integration through the strengthening and consolidation of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) free trade agreement
  6. Negotiating agreements on investment protection and economic cooperation

Main Trade agreements

South Africa has signed many agreements with its trading partners in the past few years. The country is also a beneficiary of a number of non-reciprocal trade arrangements, among them the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the Generalised System of Preferences.

KZN Exporter of the Year

Through the annual Exporter of the Year Awards programme, sponsored by Transnet Port Terminals, the Chamber recognises excellence among KZN exporters.

Exports are a cornerstone of the country’s economic strategy as they improve South Africa’s balance of trade by earning foreign revenue. Exports also serve to boost domestic manufacturing demand which creates jobs and develops skills.

Transnet Port Terminal’s commitment to the programme and their partnership with the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry in rewarding Excellence amongst KZN’s exporters, stimulates exports and in turn economic growth.
